Competition is Therapy
Built into the DNA of humans is survival. This puts us at odds with our end from the moment we begin in our mother’s womb. Innately, we have a built-in push and desire to fight against our inevitable demise. It is what has driven humans to advance, adapt, and survive.
While we have advanced in many ways past our cave men brethren, our primal drive remains the same. Competition is a way to spark that innate conflict and feed that primal need. So many of our basic needs are met in modern life we need creative ways for something to battle against, to overcome. It is an artificial way to touch that necessary part of us and is innately therapeutic.
So why is this therapeutic in nature? Therapy is healing and healing is connecting to those dark recesses of our mind and the parts of us that are demonized. Therapeutic healing allows us to understand our emotional issues and begin to integrate every part of us into a whole that thrives within our moral framework.
For men, competition is also a healthy way to express emotion and aggression. Men are wired to fight for dominance. When these feelings are suppressed, they evolve into problems such as addiction, depression, and uncontrollable anger. Competition forces us to learn where we stand. It brings up those deep emotions that otherwise would remain hindering us from beneath the surface. Go forth and compete.
