Masculinity in the modern world
Many say we are living through a crisis of masculinity. Often men feel their very nature is criticized and the spaces they used to thrive in are disappearing. In addition to these challenges is the ingrained belief of, “boys don’t cry, and pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” This leave men compromised, unable to ask for help and unsure how to proceed.
Many of our men are increasingly turning to drugs, quick fixes, and “alpha” gurus to make some sense of the world. In therapy we explore the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that impact men’s day to day lives. What does the pressure of society do to your confidence? Are you able to express yourself honestly and genuinely in relationships? The answers to these questions often impact how we interact with the world and others. In therapy we discover how we view the world, and in turn have more power over how we interact with it.
Alpha gurus will state “no one cares, work harder!” This is excellent advice, hundreds of years ago… The issues we often run into today are too complex and multilayered to face with this mindset alone. Although, the benefits of hard work, perseverance, and discipline will not be understated here. As men we desire tangible solutions to our problems. In our work together we can discover your solution and explore what barriers keep you from using it. In an increasingly intangible world, men must adapt.
When the solution to our challenges cannot be found outside of oneself, either we change our environment or begin to look within. In therapy we explore the seemingly directionless landscape of society and strive to find what brings you the client, purpose and meaning. This is often layered underneath symptoms of self-doubt, toxic relationships, and addictive behaviors. Finding what makes my clients feel alive often creates new possibilities and a self confidence that improves nearly every aspect of life.
